Description: I don’t know if this helps, but I remember a huge emergence of cicadas in the town of Ashton, Montgomery County, Maryland when I was a child. Going by the charts and maps online, I think it must have been Brood II in 1962. You couldn’t walk across the lawn without crunching on their abandoned shells. We don’t have them where I live now, in upstate New York, but I’ve been intrigued by them ever since.

Description: I saw a Cicada longer than my thumb and about as round as a hot dog. It appeared to fall out of the tree. It bounced off my deck on the second story and flew onto one of my hanging plants. I took two pictures but they did not come out very well. It was a female with the pointy abdomen. I got too close and it flew off, but it stayed on my plant for a good 5 of 6 minutes. First one I have ever seen, I am 42. Its wings did not look as though it had just emerged, although it is August 6, 2019 and this is the first day I have heard them this summer.
