Name: Arlene Eisenhower
Location: Newberry SC
Description: I was driving through Newberry county SC about 7 pm on Saturday August 28 2021 when I heard trillions of cicadas calling in the trees. It was such a loud and constant chorus of cicadas as I drove through the country side that I heard them with my windows up and over the noise of my very loud muffler. I didn’t stop to look for any but growing up in SC it’s easy to recognize their call. I just don’t remember ever hearing so many at one time. I rolled down my car windows until reaching I-26 to experience and enjoy this wonder of nature.

Name: Dawn
Location: Ohio, Geauga, Burton
Description: One appeared on my patio chair and was clinging to the underside. It fell to the porch and was on it’s back and wings with the front two legs slowly moving occasionally. The wings fluttered briefly as if trying to fly but it only managed to right itself. The lower sets of legs were already crossed as if dead and I assume it was in the process of dying. It was very pretty with gold and green. I put it under the cover of a faux succulent on my porch to let it die in peace and not be eaten by a bird.

Description: I believe I saw one on a plant leaf about 1 inch with large wings. The second on was clinging to my tomato plant stem not as large as the 1st one and did not have the large wings. Did not know what it was and cut in half with clippers and was kind of crunchy and was dead. I have a picture of this one. I’ve had 2 people tell me Cicada and one possibly could be an asian hornet. I did find about 8 holes in my garden bed when weeding but understand both live in underground. From researching this insect I have not seen anything about Cicada being in WA Sate. I also have a dead one that I have kept. I can be reached at 360-695-6434 Thank you Kathleen

While we have seen holes in the ground in Pottsville on our property & also along the Schuylkill River at Terry Reilly Park (along the Gordon Nagal Trail/Route 901) I have been incredibly disappointed to not find any exoskeletons or even hear any adults. We also saw emergence holes 2 weeks ago on May 15 2021 at Shenks Ferry Wildflower Preserve in Conestoga PA but that was it. Being a Vet Nurse & loving bugs & the microscopic world I am a bit upset. Been looking forward to these little creatures for months. I haven’t even been able to use the Cicada Safari app yet.
