Other comments: I spotted one on the sidewalk that was attempting to climb up and fly, although when I placed him on a branch, he could not fly well and simply landed on the ground again. He also had a large hole on his back between his wings where I could see inside, and this could have been what was preventing him from flying as well. And later I spotted one in some pine trees that took off after I came too close. I do not usually look for them, but when I pay attention I tend to find a few around. I took a few pictures in case you are interested in checking it out.

Thursday June 20, 2013 04:35:0

Name: KJ
State: VA
County: Fairfax
City: Clifton
Location:
GPS Coordinates:
Describe Cicadas activity: Cicadas were almost everywhere around Manassas when I was there 2 weeks ago. Extremely loud at the Battlefield. Also heard/seen in areas of Centreville (only west of I-66/US 29 exit). Somewhat patchy in SW Fairfax Co. where it overlaps some with Brood X, but seems like more this time there than in 2004.
Other comments: From my travels in SW Fairfax Co., the extent of BII seems to go along a line SSE from Braddock Rd/Pleasant Valley Rd to Lee Hwy/Stone Rd to Rte 28/Compton Rd, turns ENE to Clifton Rd/Twin Lakes Dr and Popes Head Rd/Colchester Rd, where I think it turns SE. Not 100% cicada coverage within this area, but at least 75%. It seemed to be all or nothing, so I’m thinking there are Brood II neighborhoods right next to Brood X ones.

Location: 44049 St. Andrews Church Rd, n
GPS Coordinates: 38.17’12” N & 76, 33′ 5″ W, 12
Describe Cicadas activity: We have seen the cicadas since May 15, 2013, in all forms. There are thousands and thousands that can be counted on or around each of the oak trees. The carcuses are all around. Their singing drowns out the sound of the cars on the road out front.
Other comments: We have about 10 oak trees on an acre, and saw our 1st cicada shedding on the night of May 15th (blocking our laundry room door, outside). Since then, they are EVERYWHERE! Thousands and thousands around and on every tree, the ground, the air, and everything they bump into. They seem to have slowed down now in new nightly sheds, but there are still new ones each night.

GPS Coordinates:
Describe Cicadas activity: Have been seeing cicadas for the last couple weeks then we had a rainy, cold spell. Temps are now in the 80’s and they are here! I count at least 6 sheds per oak leaf and must sweep the driveway everyday. The noise makes it impossible to spend any time outside as they can also be heard inside behind closed windows.

Describe Cicadas activity: I haven’t heard or seen any annual cicadas yet, but I heard periodic cicadas on May 17th.
Other comments: I haven’t seen any adults or nymphs, but in eastern parts of Rollingview I heard a distant hum and individual calls of 17 year cicadas (?), similar to calls I heard there in 2011 (with some stragglers in 2012). I heard them in late morning on May 17th, which was hot, dry, and sunny. None were calling in late morning on the 18th, when it was a little cooler and rain was approaching. I have not seen or heard any other cicada species so far this year. The park office is in zip code 27587, but this location is a few miles to the west.

There are numerous holes in the lawn and flower beds where they crawled out.

Can you tell me if the western parts of the affected states will see a cicada brood II emergence? Also, on the website it states “By the middle of June, most of the adults will have died off and the chorus will have ended”. But then it states “Remember, by mid-June our annual cicada species will begin to emerge and start calling”. Can you please clarify which is accurate? Thank you!
