2014 Cicada Season Reports

The 2014 Annual Cicada emergence in the Mid-Atlantic area is now underway.
This season was delayed because of the cooler than normal spring. The normal species that begin calling first each season were delayed about a week from the average emergence time. As of today, 27 June 2014, Tibicen tibicen (chloromera), T. lyricen are calling in the morning, with Neocicada hieroglyphica joining by midday. Tibicen lyricen is calling at dusk now. The remaining species (auletes, davisi, linnei and robinsoniana) haven’t started calling yet.

I didn’t see anything, but I wasn’t looking, and, besides, I didn’t know what they looked like until tonight while visiting this site.
Other comments: I’m completely inexperienced, having lived in Colorado for the last 30 years and just being here on a short vacation. However, I’m quite sure that what I heard this afternoon was the singing of cicadas.

Describe Cicadas activity: Last week I heard a fluttering from one tree to our red maple and looked up to see what it was..it looked like a Cicada but I wasn’t sure and on Friday I managed to not step on a fancy green & blue cicada that was sitting on the street (luckily I looked down at the right moment), but today while out for my usual run walk I noticed all of these flying things whizzing by at a high rate of speed, which is not the norm. As the sun was going down I kept seeing more and more to the point where I had to run to get out of the mega swarm but I couldn’t escape. I ran FAST for about two long blocks in Horror movie fashion. While looking out the front door you could see them flying, hundreds in all directions. I don’t remember the news making any announcements. It was like a nightmare! 😀 haha

To my surprise (not a happy one) I saw a huge bug on the dirt by my shed. It then walked up the wood fence. I did not know what it was but was informed later. I see them and FEEL them buzz by my hair. So far I have seen at least 5, all living. And 3 that my dog found already dead. There are 3 shells still on my wood fence. See them (praying that I don’t) any time of the day. Actually the other night felt one fly by.
